ABOUT:
A unique antique ring from Spain. You can see the telltale Iberian antique design, we often find similar fabrication on Portuguese rings from the period which makes sense. I don't know exactly how to describe this one... not marquise... not navette... kinda scalloped. It has a halo and layers / levels in a sturdy piece crafted in 18k gold and topped in silver.
The piece holds 21 rose cut diamonds in closed back foiled settings facing up with the appearance of an over 1 carat diamond cluster ring. They remain quite white and bright. The piece is antique, but I think it may be Victorian / early 1900s in the Georgian style with the cloud back fabrication. I could be wrong but the diamonds seem too bright white and the foil too reflective and the setting too sturdy (it weighs nearly 7 grams) to be a 200 year old piece? But again it is antique and how wonderful to see diamonds so white and sparkly in closed back settings.
No hallmarks remain which was the case with most all the pieces I purchased in Spain. They must not have been very strict about it back then. But it was sold to me as 18k from a reputable source, like all the pieces I acquired in Spain where it is their standard and tested to confirm.
Antique box is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size: 6 1/4, a little over
Weight: a sturdy 6.9 grams
Ring face north south: 26mm by 22mm wide.
6mm tall off the finger.
The center diamond is about 4.3mm. The others are 2 to 2.5mm. Exact depths are unknown as I would not remove them but if you were to compare their face up measurements to a modern brilliant, it wears as a cluster totaling over a carat total weight in diamonds.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
These settings with the closed backs behind the diamonds should avoid getting wet. Aside from that though, it is a sturdy and well made piece with a nice quality hand feel. The foil is in good condition, still white and reflective, not rusty or muddy. Typical antique rose cuts with some uneven edges and frosty spots. Some natural inclusions, nothing glaring. A few areas of wear, small nicks to the smaller stones from age. Wonderful patina, color and sparkle in a sturdy setting.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
