ABOUT:
Personal collection release! Table cuts are always so special to find and this is the only table cut cluster I have. But I have a table cut band I wear more frequently so I decided (sadly) to let this one go to a new / loving home!
Special old table cut diamond ring! This awesome antique diamond cluster ring is from the early 1800s / early Victorian era. French made and crafted in 18k gold with 7 table cut diamonds in the oval ring face which is topped in silver but in an open back setting! Much easier to wear than the typically found closed back settings that can't get wet and can often look rusty when the foil ages behinds the stones.
The center table cut is exceptional, crystal clear and elongated to a rectangular shape. It is surrounded by six additional table cuts in the scalloped halo surround, all possessing relatively higher crowns than we often see.
There is patina to the silver ring face with the silver chiseled to sunburst like lines out from the center. The silver recesses there are darker in color due to age, so note that the darkness you see in pics is the silver work, and not the stones. This could be polished / brightened but most of my buyers and myself prefer original patina.
Looking inside the back of the ring face, I think this one might have been closed backed and foiled originally, but was tidily opened behind each stone to make it easier to wear, to clean and to allow the light to shine through. It's possible it was always open backed but I see some tool marks there and we typically see table cuts in foiled settings so that is my guess. I always wish I knew what stories these old beauties could tell!
These table cut diamonds are one of the earlier methods of diamond cutting and are quite uncommon / collectible. The ring bears the antique 1800s French hallmark for 18k gold. The diamonds are likely earlier than the setting as these cuts typically date to the 1700s.
Ancient look with interesting / special cuts and lovely antique sparkle.
Antique box / props not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Currently measures a size 6 3/4. The ring face is about 13x10mm. The center table cut diamond is about 4.7x4mm square. The others are around 3.2mm each give or take. It weighs 2.6 grams.
CONDITION NOTES:
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition, especially considering age.
The center diamond is exceptional, crystal clear, almost see-through, transparent as glass. The others have faint natural inclusions, slightly eye visible to very slightly, and one with a small smattering of carbon. They have slight warmth in color but some of this is accented by the primitive cutting method. One is chipped in one corner. The others may appear to be but under magnification, you can see it is frosty / unpolished indicating it was always cut that way, prior to modern methods where girdles and facets can be perfectly polished, and has silver from the setting encompassing that area. They are old stones indeed!
A moodier sparkle due to the fact that table cuts can appear darker to the eye since they have fewer, flat and simpler facets. The ring has a somewhat daintier hand feel but is otherwise quite wearable considering age and scarcity. Overall a great historic piece from a very special period of diamond cutting. See notes on the patina to the silver topped ring face above.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
