Back from my inventory trip to Europe with so many hand picked one at a time finds! More examples seen in the group photo which also helps with scale : ). Feel free to check out my Instagram to see posts about the trip and where these pieces came from!
ABOUT:
These unique earrings I suppose would be considered studs in that they have ear posts, but the large scale of the circular diamond encrusted fronts with the lovely crown of diamonds above make them quite substantial. A very unique and interesting design!
There are 26 diamonds on each earring totaling around 2 1/2 carats for the pair. The larger ones are old mine cuts with the smaller accent stones in the circular part being rose cuts and old single cuts.
When I was in Barcelona, I altered my travel plans to make it back to a shop to buy an angled emerald ring listed previously. I was also originally planning to buy another ring but as I was visiting again with the lovely gentleman (who was so kind and patient enough to practice Spanish with me), he remembered he had something in the back he wanted to show me.
He came out with these earrings and they definitely stopped me in my tracks. I haven't seen any like them. Crafted in 18k gold and topped in likely platinum, they are set with a larger old mine cut diamond at the center with an openwork star or floral design, lots of diamonds and little milgrain details. Then at the top is a sort of crown of five additional bezel set diamonds. Just gorgeous to wear.
Edwardian era to Art Deco period / early 1900s I presume. They are so lovely! Despite the diamonds being set in a white precious metal as was customary for the period, these still have a warm glow from the gold shining through the recesses of the openwork design. So these could really be styled with any color of metals.
No hallmarks that I can find, which seemed to be the case with a lot of the pieces I bought in Spain, I guess they weren't as strict about it. But all the pieces I purchased were 18k and tested to confirm, and of course purchased from reputable places. The ear posts are fixed and straight, with a lever back that clicks / latches into them.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Some of my buyers draw them out to hold against the person to determine how they wear. Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Top to bottom of each is 20mm. Each round cluster is 15.5mm east west. They dome 6mm deep. The pair weighs a sturdy 7.3 grams.
There are 26 diamonds on each earring. The center largest old mine cut diamonds are 4mm each and a little over .25 carat. The largest at the center of the "crown" are about 3.7mm each. The other four in the crown of each earring are about 2.5mm each. The old mines in the petals are 1.8mm and the rest of the rose cuts are 1.5 to 1.8mm. Exact carat weight is not known as depths vary and I would never remove them but estimates to 1.25 carat per earring / 2.5 carats for the pair.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Typical antique diamonds with some natural inclusions, some of the stones appearing quite frosty overall but still with an excellent sparkle. The largest stones also have eye visible to slightly eye visible inclusions, including some indented natural inclusions on the surface of two of them. All the stones are complete but the rose cuts are rougher cut with frosty and irregular edges (they most often look this way on pieces of this age). Again all typical as they didn't pay attention to any sort of grading scales back then, when stones were in much more limited supply. When worn the diamonds look beautiful, bright and well matching with plenty of sparkle due to the sheer magnitude of them. Two of the rose cuts, one on the right side of one earring and the left side of the other, have a bit of warmth in that area that appears in some lighting conditions. I don't know if it was reinforced or if it is just the stone as they are so small that even under magnification I can't detect what is causing that but you might notice it in some of the photos. The hinged backs aren't springy but they latch so they are secure. I don't ever recommend 24/7 wear on antique earrings though due to age.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
