Back from my summer inventory trips to several countries / cities in Europe. I am selling an assortment of vintage to antique jewelry and rings which I have hunted for and gathered one at a time from around the world. Some examples seen in the last photo - thanks for stopping by!
ABOUT:
I'm going to start off with one of my faves from the trip. At first glance when I saw it in the jewelry case in Rome with my late forties aged eyes, I thought it was a rose cut diamond, as we usually see old mine cuts more chunky and not quite so spready! I was excited because I love finding old mine cuts in elongated and out of round shapes and it is eye clean!. This one has a sort of freeform oval shape in a large buttercuppy type of basket setting that is reminiscent of a star design the way the prongs make little triangles shooting out from the center stone.
With a nice footprint on the finger and the spready diamond to catch the light, it is quite impactful on the finger.
The ring face is crafted in silver with a rosy gold backing, the shank tests between 10k and 14k but as I don't have a 12k test, I'm selling it as 10k to be safe.
Found in Rome, it appears to be a conversion where the ring face may have been a pin or other component and was added to a shank. Elegant forked shoulders allow the large ring face to be the star of the show.
Antique boxes, props, mice, dishes ; ) not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
The reeded shank is a Size 8,
Ring face is 11.3mm north to south and east to west and it stands 5.5mm off the finger. It weighs 2.7 grams.
Diamond is about 8.8mm by 5.5mm and a spready cut, it estimates to only around .65 carat with the shallow pavilion. But with it being so spready, it faces up quite a bit larger on the finger. An 8.8mm by 6mm oval diamond that is a modern brilliant cut with the mathematically perfected facets and pavilion would measure around 1.25 carat to give you an idea of scale, so it absolutely faces up larger than a full carat while wearing, with the joy of being a hand cut, eye clean antique stones. And with an open back! Making it easier to wear and clean as these can get wet. I would not remove the stones for exact measurements so these figures are an estimate.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition, especially considering age. One area on the far side has chips and shallow flakes of loss making that area slightly out of round. The setting does help mask it but you can see the frosty marks in that area. In a few other spots there are nicks and nibbles to the girdle edge but it still reads as an elongated oval in shape.
Slight warmth to the stone but faces up quite bright with the excellent clarity and a moody sparkle, softer due to the elongated facets. This one needs gentle wear or reinforcement by your jeweler as most of the prongs are worn. There are still a lot of them so you'd want to wear it gently or reinforce only the minimum possible vs overworking the piece and making it like new which can muddy the details.
I love the patina in the recesses to the silver but this could also be brightened if desired. Most of my buyers prefer original patina. There is one spot of verdigris which must be from a solder point where the shank was connected to the ring face. Note that the forked shank doesn't encircle the underside of the ring face, but props it up just slightly like two fingers on each side.
Quite an uncommon one with a great stone in a unique and impressive design.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
I would be delighted if you'd follow me in my shop. Thanks for stopping by!
