ABOUT:
I paid handsomely for this one due to its one of a kind-ness, weight, quality and all around uniqueness but it's a bit too large for me to get good wear out of it so I am letting it go : (. It's certainly the best stackable band I've ever had with its weight and character.
I always wish I knew all the stories my pieces could tell but this 86 year old eternity ring is especially intriguing. I purchased it in France. Certainly a custom made piece, it has a very unique design of swirling wave like details, their ends encrusted with very chunky old mine cut diamonds, with three sections of diamonds in a linear and cruciform pattern. Inside it is dated in French: 10 Juillet (for July 10) 1929 1939 with a monogram letter cypher SL LS in between. Spinning the ring, we find a set of initials: EM and AE, spinning it again we find the engravings MBA and EAM. With all the initials I wondered if it was made to commemorate an anniversary?
It has the most amazing hand feel to it. Very thick 18k gold with the high crowns of the old cut diamonds cropping out of it. Just an incredible texture and movement to the piece in addition to being a tactile beast.
The piece holds 39 old cut diamonds, most all are the hand chiseled old mine cuts, some elongated, with overly high crowns from their single row of triangular scissor cuts, and there is one small rose cut and single cut.
No hallmarks remain but I purchased this in France where the standard is 18k, it was sold to me as such and tested to confirm.
Please note the detailed measurements that I always provide, as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures where I am required to show zoomed in detail.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Size 7 1/2.
The band is 6.1mm north south. Super thick gold, about 3mm off the finger with a nice dome. Weight is a very sturdy 9.6grams.
The smallest few diamonds are 1.8mm and the largest few are the elongated ones in the center of the crosses at 3.2mm but the majority of the stones are in the 2mm range give or take. The gold work encompasses them so they widen out an unknown amount the way they are nested into the gold design and cropping out by the crowns. Thereby exact carat weight is unknown as I would not remove them, but it's got to be at least 1.5 carat with all 39 of the stones.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Because of the incredibly high crowns and the fact that this is an eternity ring, several of the stones have nibbles and small chips from when the palm of the hand makes contact with surfaces. All special hand chiseled old cut stones but there are those signs of age. Most are just a nibble but one has some loss to one side of the stone and another appears frosty from loss to some flakes of diamond in the crown. The stones are small so this is not glaringly eye visible and the piece appears complete. The most amazing texture, fun to view from the side to see them cropping out. Note though that this is also felt while wearing the piece as the high crowns come into contact with the adjacent fingers. This is just how it was made, if one were to stack it with another chunky band, that would lessen how much of that is felt.
Also typical for antique stones they have some faint inclusions and can read a bit gray due to their cuts and how they are set, all adding more and more character to this already one of a kind piece.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
